Pinellas County, FL. — This evening, Ruth’s List Florida congratulated Lisset Hanewicz for her victory in the St. Petersburg primary. She now faces Tom Mullins in the general election for the District 4 City Council seat in November.
A first-time candidate, Lisset would bring a wealth of experience in activism and public service to the Council. She’s a former prosecutor and longtime resident of St. Pete, President of the Crescent Lake Neighborhood Association, and a board member of the Shirley Proctor Puller Foundation, which works to close the educational gap for children in St. Petersburg.
“We are thrilled to congratulate Lisett on her primary victory,” said Lucy Sedgwick, President and CEO of Ruth’s List Florida and a resident of St. Pete. “With her election, we are one step closer to maintaining a female super-majority on the St. Petersburg City Council. St. Pete has been a model of strong female leadership, and our council has worked together efficiently and effectively to benefit the people of St. Pete.”
Ruth’s List also endorsed Darden Rice for Mayor, who came in third in Tuesday’s election. “While we’re disappointed in the outcome, we are proud to have supported her candidacy. Darden ran a hard-fought race and has given so much of her time and talent to St. Pete. We know she will continue to do great things for the city,” said Sedgwick.
Ruth’s List is a statewide organization founded with the mission of identifying, training, and electing pro-choice women to state and local government, and building a pipeline of women leaders who bring diverse perspectives and a powerful vision to local government.
