We welcome Amaris Leon, Program and Communications Director, to our statewide staff.
She will be based in Orlando and will be primarily responsible for all grassroots membership support and growth as well as organizational communications.
Amaris Leon, who grew up in, and aged out of the foster care system, knows from experience the social and political injustices that plague the United States. Amaris has dedicated her education and career to empowering, training and mobilizing voters and candidates that accurately represent the majority of America and are committed to correcting social and economic injustice.
Amaris has lived in Central Florida for the past seven years. She earned her bachelor’s degree in legal studies from the University of Central Florida. While attending UCF and working full-time at a law firm, Amaris served as a volunteer children’s advocate with the Legal Aid Society of the Orange County Bar Association, where she assisted social workers and guardian’s ad litem in developing permanency and placement plans for children in need.
In May of 2019 Amaris earned her Juris Doctorate degree from Florida A&M College Law. While pursuing her J.D. she worked for Organize Florida during the 2018 mid-term elections as an electoral organizer, building the Orange County field plan for Andrew Gillum and the Amendment Four Voters Rights Restorations initiative. After the mid-term elections Amaris transitioned from electoral to political organizer with Organize Florida, where she developed the Orange County Political Committee, created a legislative training curriculum for the organization’s members, assisted with membership recruitment, and tracked republican sponsored bills.
In addition to her legal education and campaign experience, Amaris also volunteers for a national civil rights nonprofit that advocates specifically for the rights and protection of sexual assault survivors throughout the judicial process.
Now serving as the Program and Communications Director of Ruth’s List, Amaris is devoted to her using rich personal experience combined with legal training, legislative lobbying, and field organizing to change the face of power in Florida by electing Democratic pro-choice women.
